Stone Setting
Stone Setting Classes — Learn Traditional Jewellery Setting Techniques
At Stephen Barnett Jewellery in Farnham, Surrey, I offer one-to-one, in-person stone setting tuition covering all of the most commonly used professional techniques. These classes are designed to give you a deep understanding of how to prepare, cut, and set stones to a professional standard using traditional hand tools.
Each session is tailored to your current skill level and learning goals. You can select from set courses or create your own custom class by combining different techniques. As a general guide:
We can usually cover three single-stone settings in one day
Or one to two multi-stone settings, depending on complexity
If you’re unsure which styles to combine, I’ll be happy to discuss your experience and help design the perfect bespoke stone setting course for you. All classes focus on traditional hand-cutting and setting methods, teaching you how to use simple, precise tools to achieve professional results — without the need for expensive equipment. After all, you wouldn’t learn to drive in a Ferrari — so why start stone setting with thousands of pounds worth of tools, when jewellers have been mastering these techniques for centuries using hand tools alone?
These stone setting classes are ideal for jewellers looking to refine their craftsmanship, gain confidence at the bench, and build a solid technical foundation for any type of setting work.
